Users of the current system include various departments and authorities within the City, the County, towns, villages and public safety entities, hospitals, emergency management centers, the regional international airport, public library system, and public works groups. ECC Technologies is the consulting group of record and has overall responsibility for the continued development, design, implementation, marketing, and operations of the county wide fiber backbone.
Wireless strategies to support last mile solutions such as WiFi and high speed public safety broadband are currently being implemented. This system, when completed, will comprise of 267 points of presence and direct access to hundreds of buildings and towers located throughout the County. Additionally, this fiber will be integrated with regional efforts and ECC projects underway in surrounding counties and when completed will be the hub to integrate eight counties in Western NY State.
ECC provides the design, engineering, and construction management services for this project. ECC developed the business plan and formed the collaboration between municipal and private entities to support the development of this model. It is intended that this model will be migrated to a fully open access model once completed in 2010. ECC will provide marketing and operational support during the process and into the foreseeable future.
